This web page is about CA cobra. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) is a program that allows certain individuals to continue their group health insurance coverage after they have left a job or where they no longer work enough hours to qualify for their company's health insurance plan. In most situations Cobra medical coverage can usually last for 18 months. COBRA typically requires that group health policies sponsored by employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year offer employees and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of health coverage in certain circumstances where coverage under the plan would otherwise terminate. The program allows employees and their families who lose their medical coverage the right to choose to continue their group health benefits provided by their group health coverage for a limited period of time under specific circumstances such as transition between jobs, involuntary job loss, divorce, reduction in the hours worked, voluntary job loss or death. A person who is on Cobra might be required to pay the full premium for coverage as well as an extra 2 percent of the cost of the plan as an administrative fee. Once an individual has lost his or her group health plan coverage their are 60 days to accept Cobra coverage or lose all rights to benefits.
