People who meet certain criteria might be able to get Medicare if they require dialysis because of end-stage renal disease or because they need a kidney transplant irregardless of their age. If an individual qualifies for Medicare because of ESRD their Medcare coverage begins the fourth month that they receive dialysis. Coverage can start sooner if an individual can administer their own at-home dialysis. It is also possible to in the month an individual is admitted into a Medicare-approved hospital for a kidney transplant, or two months before the transplant is scheduled to begin if there is a delay before the proceedure can be performed. You may stay on Medicare for up to one year after your dialysis treatment ends or three years after a kidney transplant. Inpatient dialysis treatments and supplies come under Part A, but outpatient dialysis treatments and supplies are covered under Part B of Medicare. For inpatient hospital stays which include dialysis Medicare pays for the dialysis under Part A in the same way it would any other Medicare Part A covered hospital stay.
