To receive Part B of Medicare a person has to pay a monthly premium. In reality a person who has Medicare Part B is only paying a portion of the actual premium with the government paying for the majority of the premium. Medicare Part B helps to pay for many of the costs of health care not covered under Part A. Medical services including doctor's services (not including routine physical exams) laboratory tests, outpatient mental health care and outpatient physical therapy, outpatient hospital services, second opinions, outpatient medical and surgical services as well as supplies, blood received as an outpatient and durable medical equipment. For Medicare Part B there is a co-payment and an annual deductible for covered services. This is another significant difference between Part A and Part B. Under Part B a person is responsible for 20% of the approved amount after having met the deductible. If certain conditions are met Medicare Part B may help to pay for glaucoma screenings, mammograms, diagnostic tests, prosthetic limbs, transplants, second opinions, pelvic exams, pap tests, vaccinations, prostate cancer screenings, bone mass measurements, ambulance services, dialysis, artificial eyes, colorectal cancer screenings, diabetes services and supplies, emergency care and braces. Medicare Part B does exclude certain physician services. These include eye exams and glasses, routine physical exams, most cosmetic surgery, routing foot care and hearing exams.
