This web page explains California cobra. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) is a program which allows certain individuals to continue their group health insurance plan after they have left a job or when they no longer work enough hours to qualify for their company's medical insurance plan. Under most situations Cobra health coverage will usually last for 18 months. COBRA usually requires that group medical policies sponsored by employers that have 20 or more employees in the previous year offer employees and their families the opportunity for a temporary extension of medical coverage in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end. The program gives workers and their families who lost their medical coverage the ability to continue their group health benefits provided by their group health coverage for a limited period of time under specific circumstances such as death, divorce, voluntary job loss, involuntary job loss, transition between jobs or reduction in the hours worked. A person who is on Cobra might be required to pay the entire premium for the coverage as well as an extra two percent of the cost of the plan as an administrative fee. Once you have lost your group medical plan coverage their are 60 days to accept Cobra coverage or lose all rights to benefits.
