The purpose of this internet web page is to discuss California Medicare advice. The Medicare system is a federal government health insurance program. It was added to the Social Security system in 1965 by congress. Medicare is mainly a program for the elderly. It also provides health care for some people with disabilities irregardless of age. Medicare is supervised by a government organization called the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. These federal government agencies work together with state insurance officials as well as private insurers and health care providers to organize the Medicare system. The Medicare system is broken up into two parts. Part A covers hospital costs and Part B covers medical expenses thus supplementing Part A's coverage. The federal government contracts with private insurers, called fiscal intermediaries, to provide claims processing for Medicare Part A benefits. For Part B benefits private insurers known as carriers are contracted to do the claims processing. In some instances Medicare coverage is treated as secondary. For example if a liability plan covers treatment as is sometimes the case in an automobile accident, Medicare could then be treated as secondary insurance.
