In order to be eligible for Medicare hospice benefits a person must be certified as terminally ill by a doctor and the hospice medical director, be eligible for Medicare Part A, receive care from a Medicare-approved hospice organization and sign a statement saying you wish to receive hospice care instead of routine Medicare care. Medicare does not pay for care from a hospice other than the one the person first chose, duplicate care from some other provider for services covered by your hospice, room and board if you live in a nursing home or your own home while receiving the hospice care and treatment intended to cure the illness. A person who is receiving Medicare hospice care can continue to use their Medicare plan to receive care for health problems that are not related to the terminal illness in the same way that they would if they were not also receiving the hospice care.
