The purpose of this web page is to discuss California Medigap eligibility. Medicare is available for several different classes of people. If you or your spouse has worked and paid Medicare taxes for a sufficient period of time and are 65 or older then you should be able to receive Medicare Part A without having to pay a monthly premium for it. If neither you nor your spouse paid Medicare taxes for a sufficient period of time and are now 65 years of age then you may be able to buy Medicare Part A. Eligibility for Medicare Part A occurs not at retirement, but at age 65. This means a person could still be working while receiving coverage from Medicare. If a person still has medical coverage from their employer then their Medicare coverage would be secondary. People who are under 65 years of age may be eligible for Medicare benefits if they meet certain criteria. You may be eligible if you have been entitled to Social Security disability benefits or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for two years or longer. A person who has end-stage renal disease may be eligible for Medicare. This is when someone has permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. A person who turns age 65 can qualify for Medicare based on their spouses Social Security contributions. The importance of this is that people who have not worked sufficiently to qualify for Medicare themselves can qualify based on their spouses payments into the Social Security system.
