California Medigap Plan J Benefits

All currently sold Medicare Supplement policies must cover a minimum set of benefits. These minimum benefits are called the Medicare Supplement core benefits. A Medicare Supplement Plan J offers the core benefits and additional benefits.

The Plan J Medicare Supplement benefits are:

Covering the Part A co-payments for the 61st day of hospitalization through the 90th day of hospitalization.

Paying the Part A coinsurance amount for the 60 lifetime hospital reserve days.

Paying the Part A hospital expenses after all Medicare Part A hospital benefits have been exhausted.

Paying the cost of the first three pints of blood under both Part A and Part B.

Covering the Part B co-payments for Medicare approved charges.

Paying for at-home recovery. This coverage pays for at-home assistance with the activities of daily living (ADLs) while a person qualifies for Medicare home health care benefits. This at-home recovery coverage pays for up to a certain amount per visit by the provider and is subject to an annual maximum.

Paying the Medicare Part A deductible per benefit period.

Covering the Medicare Part A coinsurance for the 21st to the 100th day of care in a skilled nursing facility.

Covering 80% of the billed charges for emergency treatment, physician services and other medical services received in a foreign country that is medically necessary. The care must begin within 60 days of leaving the United States. This benefit has a $250 deductible and is subject to a $50,000 lifetime maximum benefit. This care has to be a type of treatment that would be covered by Medicare if the care been received in the United States.

Paying the Medicare Part B deductible.

Paying 100% of the Medicare Part B excess charges.

Pays for a variety of preventive care services not covered by Medicare. There is an annual limit on this coverage.

It is also possible for extra benefits to be offered in Medicare Supplement plans, but these extra benefits must be approved by the state insurance commissioner.
